Welcome to the Urban Sensing/Analytics Lab at the University of Glasgow!
We are a multidisciplinary research group focusing on urban big data analytics, geographic data science, and urban remote sensing/climatology at the Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC), Urban Studies, and the University of Glasgow.
UBDC is a research centre and national data service based at the University of Glasgow, funded by ESRC from 2014. We promote the use of new forms of urban big data and innovative research methods to improve social, economic and environmental well-being in cities.
Urban Studies in the University of Glasgow is internationally renowned and was ranked joint-highest in the UK from the results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) in the area of Architecture, Built Environment and Planning.
University of Glasgow is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world (founded in 1451), one of the UK Russel Group public research university members, and the #11 ranked university in UK and world’s #67 (QS2020).
In our urban sensing/analytics lab, we are particularly interested in how new forms of urban big data from government agencies (NHS, Glasgow City Council/Region), commercial companies (Strava, Zoopla), non-profit sectors (the Salvation Army, the British Red Cross), sensor networks (Urban Observatory, Urban Climatology Testbed), and citizens (portable sensing via smart phone/watch apps such as ActivityLog (App Store or Google Play)) can help us understand, develop, and govern future cities.
We embrace the open access and reproducibility/replicability culture in our research with open source data, tools and codes where available. The ultimate goal in this research group is to advance fundamental understanding of the human-environment nexus in the urban areas and promote sustainable and smart cities in the near future.
